Re-Visit: Mr. Bartley's Gourmet Burgers

Are you a fan of wacky, outrageous burgers? Do you like thin and crispy onion rings? And do you like classic desserts turned into milkshakes?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need to go to Mr. Bartley’s Gourmet Burgers in Harvard Square. It has all of these things and more. To emphasize how awesome this place is, let me tell you this: after I stopped being a vegetarian, this place is what got me to like burgers again. A of time has passed since TasteBUds' last visit in 2013, where Ayush visited, so it's time for another visit!

Mr. Bartley’s burgers were voted #1 burgers in America by the Boston Globe and the Wall Street Journal. Each one is named after a pop culture icon or local landmark. For example, the LeBron James burger is topped with bacon and ghost pepper mac and cheese. The Snoop Dogg burger is topped with bacon and ghost pepper jack. The iPhone burger is topped with boursin cheese, grilled mushrooms, and onions. There are burgers named for Beyonce, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Viagra, the MBTA, and Gay Marriage, to name a few. Each one has creative, delicious toppings and is served with fries, sweet potato fries, or their famous onion rings, which are battered and fried to order. Guy Fieri’s favorite burger was the Triple D, a double burger topped with bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce and grilled onion.

For dessert, Mr. Bartley’s serves a variety of different frappes, some of which are inspired by classic American desserts (check out the apple pie a la mode or the smores flavors). They are extravagant and indulgent and will fix any sweet tooth.

Whether you go for the burgers or the frappes, you will be fascinated by the decor, which includes plaques at the tables where celebrities sat. There are posters, stickers, and funny signs to keep you entertained all throughout your meal.

The delicious food and fun atmosphere have kept Mr. Bartley’s Gourmet Burgers in business for more than fifty years, and with luck they will be around for many more. After all, I have a lot of years of missed burgers to make up for.
