Give the Green Slime a Chance!

I never thought I would become one of those “green smoothie” people. The virescent mixture always reminded me of the slime from Nickelodeon’s Slime Time Live, and seemed anything but appetizing. However, as I started to revamp my diet and workout routine this semester, I have been constantly looking for easy and healthy on-the-go food. I finally decided to give in to the smoothie hype. After spending way too much money on smoothies at FitRec and other shops around campus, I decided that it was time to experiment on my own.

This fall, I jumped on the healthy smoothie bandwagon, and have become increasingly creative. The best part about smoothie making is that you can really throw anything into the mix, from jalapenos, to mint, to peanut butter, to chocolate. I like to try something new each time I make one! I can whip one up in as little as five minutes, or prepare them ahead of time, which is perfect for when I need to rush out the door for work or class. Not only are they enjoyable to drink, but also I have found that my smoothies, when filled with nutrient-dense ingredients, can make for a satisfying meal any time of day.

I recommend the NutriBullet blender because it is extremely easy to use and lets you mix up your smoothie in a ready-to-go cup, but any blender will do the trick. Here are a few green smoothie recipes to get you started. Try not to be fooled by their appearances—these concoctions taste way better than they look. Happy smoothie-ing!

Strawberry Banana Basil Smoothie

  • 1 fresh or frozen banana
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 10 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 ice cubes
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice
  • A splash of milk (almond or soy milk work, too!)

The Ultimate Green Smoothie

  • Handful of fresh kale
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • ½ cup nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 2 ice cubes

 Peanut Butter Heaven

  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 fresh or frozen banana
  • Handful of fresh spinach
  • ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 ice cubes
